There were numerous of battles in WW2. Many were overseas in Europe, where it all started. When the United States entered, they joined into the battles too. One of those battles was the Battle of Okinawa. The battle took place near the Ryukyu Islands, which is near Okinawa.This battle was the largest on water assault in the Pacific War. The battle lasted for 82 days, from early April to mid June of 1945.
Okinawa is a large island 340 miles away from the mainland of Japan. Okinawa was used as a base of air operations for the planned attack on the mainland. Four divisions of the US 10th Army and two Marine divisions fought on the island. There are many nicknames for this war because of the extreme kamikaze attacks made by the Japanese. There were many deaths on both sides of the fight. It is said that the Japanese lost 77,166 soldiers and their Allies who helped lost 14,009 deaths.
