After graduation, Nimitz joined the USS Ohio for two years before taking command of the USS Panay. After sometime he took command of the USS Decatur. After being at seas, Nimitz returned to the US in 1907. Nimitz was assigned to lead the lead the USS Plunger, USS Snapper, USS Narwal and USS Skipjack, until 1912. After successfully leading the USS Skipjack, Nimitz was awarded the Silver Lifesaving Medal by the Treasury Department for his heroic action in saving W.J. Walsh from drowning.
Through the years after, Nimitz captained many ships and submarines, earning medals along the way. Nimitz hauled down his flag at Pearl Harbor on 26 Nov. 1945. On January 1st 1948, he reported as special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy in the Western Sea Frontier. In 1951, President Truman appointed Nimitz as Chairman of the nine-man commission on International Security and Industrial Rights. Sadly though, this commission never got underway because Congress never passed appropriate legislation. After about eight more years, Nimitz passed away on February 20th, 1966.
